Area of Kamrunag lake in Mandi district being planned as a biodiversity heritage site

Government will provide protection for the wildlife of these heritage sites.

It is a very popular site for tourists and religious pilgrims alike. The Kamrunag Lake is situated in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh. This area has very rich bio-diversity and is being set to be a Bio-diversity heritage site. The government directed the Himachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board to start taking measures to prepare the site for this purpose.

A recent meeting was held by the top officials of the biodiversity board and the ‘Panchayats’ (local village governing bodies) to discuss any issues in declaring the land as a heritage site. Other parties who attended the meeting were the forest department officials, members of the bio-diversity management committee, and some local experts in the area.

The Biodiversity heritage sites have a unique feature of preserving the ecological ecosystem of the area. All water bodies and local as well as rare species of insects, animals, and birds are all protected.

The Himachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board stressed the fact that initiatives are needed to conserve the unique areas of Himachal Pradesh. This has to be done with the dialogue with the local people and governing bodies.

Some areas have been defined in the Kullu district of Himachal that is being planned as a Biodiversity Heritage Site. After the official declaration of these areas as heritage sites, the government will provide resources for the protection and preservation of the rare species, of plants, insects, birds, and animals.
