Beautiful villages along the Indo-China border will soon be open to tourists

These destinations are located near Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Ladakh, and Arunachal Pradesh

The Union government has announced plans to open the villages along the Chinese border under the Vibrant Village program. A meeting about this was held by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). The meeting was held with public representatives of such villages from several states. The states included Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, the Union Territory of Ladakh, and Arunachal Pradesh.

There are almost 198 villages within the 242 km border of Himachal Pradesh with China. This data came across as per the revised Border Areas Development Plan (BADP). To start with, the villages that are situated within a 10 km distance from the last border village will be given priority.

An arch will be drawn to select villages that fall within the 10 km distance, and this is how the last village on the border will be spotted. These villages will be selected based on development and the setting up of all necessary facilities. This, in turn, will help to control tribal migration and integrate border villages.

The villages that are situated closest to the international border are Chitkul, Chango, and Namgia. Along the international boundary between India and China, there are a total of nine passes (seven in Kinnaur, two in Lahaul, and Spiti).

Under the Vibrant Villages Programme, the detailed project reports (DPRs) for the development of border villages are being prepared to avail the benefits of the scheme in the next financial year (2022-23), said Ram Subhag Singh, the Chief Secretary of Punjab.

According to him, the talks held between the Secretary of Border Management and the Deputy Commissioners of Kinnaur, Lahaul, and Spiti districts have been deemed possible.

To fill the critical gaps with a focus on developing tourist sites, Under the BADP, the selected villages will be provided with livelihoods along with strengthened communication, accessible road connectivity, and other facilities.
