Cannabis cultivation will be legalized in Himachal Pradesh

The cultivation will only be for medicinal and industrial purposes.

The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Mr. Jai Ram Thakur announced that due to the massive debt of the state of Himachal Pradesh, plans are being made to legalize the cultivation of Cannabis. The legalization of cannabis will help the state to make significant revenues that will help pay for its debts and improve the state economy.

Cannabis cultivation and consumption has been outlawed since 1985 under the act of NDPS (Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances). According to the Chief Minister, the cultivation will be done in a controlled manner and the plants produced will be used for medicinal and industrial purposes only.

According to the estimated data by the government, there will be a creation of 50,000 jobs that will uplift the local economy. These jobs will directly help 280,000 families who will benefit from the legalization of cannabis. As per the estimates, the decision would lead to an additional 50,000 jobs in the state and benefit 2.8 lakh families.

Other than Himachal Pradesh, the state of Uttarakhand became the first Indian state to legalize cannabis cultivation for industrial production. The production of Hemp has created hundreds of jobs and business opportunities for the locals in Uttarakhand.

Several products can be produced from Hemp such as clothes, ropes, construction materials, and many more. The decision by the Himachal Pradesh government will not authorize the recreational use of cannabis. According to the government, only industrial production will be allowed in a controlled manner and this will help people recover from the economic crisis caused by the pandemic.
