Dharamshala’s sacred Dal Lake dries up as winter sets in

Dal Lake is one of the most visited tourists attractions in Naddi, Dharamsala.

If you haven’t been to Dal Lake in Naddi Village, then maybe you don’t know Dharamshala that well! But as the winter is almost here, the lake situated in the outskirts of Dharamshala town has almost dried up. The problem is not a recent one. This issue has been around for more than a decade and unfortunately, resulted in the death of hundreds of fish.

According to a local, when the elders of the village visited the lake, they saw the fish was stuck in the mud, dying. Some youngsters from the village even made the effort to save the fish and also informed the authorities. The enchanting lake that once had crystal clear water, is dying one more death every year. The storage capacity of the lake has surpassed the saturation level.

Located 1,775 meters above sea level amid thick cedar forest, the enchanting lake dries up every winter. It is reduced to a mere mud pond. This has also resulted in harming the flora and fauna of the nearby areas. The lake is not only a tourist destination, it is also an important religious place for the locals. The devotees take a holy dip in this lake on some special occasions.

The government has claimed to have spent crores to save the lake. But apparently, there are no proper results to the problem. Although the Dharamshala sub-divisional magistrate Shilpi Beakta is starting afresh and taking steps to scrap this problem. She claims that mitigation efforts have already been started by the Jal Shakti Department. And water is being pumped to the lake so that the fishes can survive. She also mentioned the transfer of the fish to some other water body.

So, now the question is, will these new efforts revive the lake? Let’s hope the new efforts bring in some solid results and this time the government takes full responsibility for it.
