The Government of Nagaland decided not to allow the Hornbill Festival this year due to the Coronavirus Pandemic.

The Hornbill Festival starts every December 1st and for 10 days it showcases the culture and the heritage of the state of Nagaland. Tourists from all over the world come to attend this festival.

Currently, the government officials announced that considering the pandemic situation hosting the Hornbill Festival would not be possible. However, if there is any significant improvement in the spread of the virus, the decision can be changed.

The Hornbill Festival plays a very important role in the tourism industry of Nagaland as it is the main source of income for the state. Many people who benefit from the festival include hotel owners, guides, taxi operators, and travel agencies. Also, many artisans and craftsmen get an opportunity to sell their hand-made items that promote the culture of Nagaland.

Since the beginning of the year, there has not been any tourist visiting Nagaland. Many businesses associated with tourists have already collapsed.

The Hornbill Festival is also good for the neighboring state of North-East India because tourists usually travel to the whole of North-Eastern states while they are visiting Nagaland.

Many initiatives have been started by promoting local art and culture and hosting events to bring in people to learn more about Nagaland. However, the progress can only be expected by restarting of tourism in the state and also to take measures to contain the virus.

The following YouTube video from the channel called ‘Denkars Getaway’ shows a YouTuber travelling during Hornbill Festival of Nagaland and talking about the culture of the local people.
