Landslides in Sikkim and Darjeeling strands tourists

Landslides and heavy rainfall is currently being reported in the state of Uttarakhand and Kerala.

Heavy downpour today, caused landslides in regions of Sikkim and Darjeeling. Due to heavy rainfall, many major roads were blocked. A major link road towards the state of West Bengal also got blocked. Several properties were damaged along with one major bridge. The consistent rainfall has created unsuitable conditions for traveling by road.

Several areas in Jalpaiguri, Darjeeling, and Sikkim are still being hit by heavy rainfall. Earlier this week, states of Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand also got hit by flash floods and landslides which are causing major disruptions. Many people have been reported missing and many were killed due to these natural disasters.

These bad weather conditions are expected to continue this week and a change of season is expected. However, until then, all tourist activities will be halted. Presently, it is difficult to assess the exact damage caused by the landslides. All tourists have been advised not to travel during the current weather conditions. Tourists visiting the popular destinations in Sikkim and Darjeeling are stuck due to the inaccessibility of the roads.

After a long period of lockdown, the tourism sector is expected to revive. These natural disasters have created havoc in the initial stage of recovery. However, with the start of international tourism, India is restarting its tourist activities in popular tourist destinations.

Once the weather improves in the states Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Uttarakhand, the winter tourism season is likely to bring in thousands of tourists. The restoration work of the roads and infrastructure is underway before the tourism activities start.
