Locusts in large swarms have destroyed India’s summer crops. This was the worst locust attack since last 27 years. After ravaging the states of Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, the locust swarms reached Delhi yesterday.

Pesticides are being sprayed to kill these insects to prevent further damage to the crops. However, the significant amount of damage to the crops has already been done. It is estimated that more than 120,000 acres of crops have been destroyed completely.

It is feared that the food prices will go up due to the crop damage and shortage of food supply. Many farmers suffered huge losses due to the lockdown restrictions. With the locust attack, it seems the farming community will not be able to revive from the economic stress any time soon.

Pakistan also suffered heavily last month due to the destruction caused by the locusts. The swarms entered Rajasthan and started to wreak havoc to the already scarce food resources.

The following video from ‘The Quint’ shows in detail the areas that got affected by this new crisis.
