Monsoon Fury slows Himachal Pradesh Tourism, Hotels Offer 50% Discount

Due to landslides and flash floods, tourists are avoiding Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh, severely impacted by this year’s relentless monsoon, strives to lure tourists back to its gorgeous mountains. In a bid to woo travelers amid the monsoon’s havoc, the Himachal Pradesh hotel association is offering a significant 50% discount on room tariffs.

Since the onset of the monsoon on June 24, flash floods and landslides have claimed 187 lives in the state. Consequently, the hotel occupancy rate has plummeted to nearly zero. However, Himachal’s Public Works Minister, Vikramaditya Singh, assures tourists that the situation is improving, urging them to return as the state is now safe to travel.

The tourism industry, recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic, encountered a severe setback due to heavy rains. The Dharamshala to Mcleodganj National Highway suffered severe damage, and the estimated loss in Dharamshala alone exceeds Rs 6 crore, with more reports pending.

To promote the road to recovery, hotels, and the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation are providing a 50% discount on room rents until September 15. The hotel industry remains optimistic about a gradual increase in tourist inflow by September.

Despite the relief and rescue operations undertaken by the state government, viral videos of landslides, stranded tourists, floods, and damage continue to deter visitors. Since June 24, 184 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents and road accidents, with 33 others reported missing. However, the state strives to reassure travelers and revive its tourism industry, emphasizing the current safe conditions for exploration.
