Spike of 31% in Covid cases reported in Kerala

Kerala has been the hotspot for Covid since the beginning of the pandemic.

According to the recent data, the number of new Covid cases in Kerala has spiked. In the last 24 hours, a 31 percent increase has been reported in the number of new cases in Kerala. This spike has been called ‘Onam Spike’. According to the health officials, the cases started rising after the festival of Onam.

The social gatherings in Kerala during the festival of Onam are believed to be the cause of the recent spike. The positivity rate in Kerala now stands at around 19 percent. The Ernakulam district has the highest number of Covid cases. Also, places such as Thrissur, Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Kollam, Kottayam, Kannur, Alappuzha, Thiruvananthapuram, Idukki, Pathanamthitta, and Wayanad are affected the most.

Kerala government is now planning to vaccinate the entire adult population in order to bring the cases down. The expected revival of tourism cannot be expected any time soon now. The spike is believed to become more severe in the coming months.

Only time will tell, if the situation regarding travel will improve in Kerala. Kerala has been the worst-affected state since the beginning of the pandemic. It seems that this will most likely continue in the future.
