The local tourism department announced that Spiti Valley will remain closed for this year

Lack of medical facilities and poor infrastructure makes the people of Spiti more fearful of the pandemic.

After the announcement to open Himachal Pradesh by the Chief Minister yesterday, the local tourism department of Spiti announced that the valley will remain closed for this whole year.

The decision was taken because there is a fear of a rising number of COVID cases with more incoming tourists. The Spiti Tourism society decided not to open any tourism activities for this whole year.

Another concern of the residents of Himachal is the unavailability of the medical services in high altitude regions. For people to find medical help in the times of pandemic would be very difficult for these people.

The area of Lahaul-Spiti had no case of COVID because of the lockdown restrictions that were in place. But now, because of the decision to open the lockdown, the increase in the number of tourists is expected.

The officials from the local tourism society said that people in the valley will not be able to cope with the COVID infections. The lack of infrastructure, limited medical facilities, and ‘High Mountain Sickness.  According to officials of the Spiti Tourism Society, the people in Spiti will not be able to handle the pandemic situation.

The Spiti valley is popular for its mountain peaks, scenic beauty, and Buddhist monasteries. Every year, thousands of tourists visit Lahaul and Spiti but this year it will be closed for the tourists.

The clear objective to open up lockdown restrictions is to boost the economy through tourism. The economy of Himachal largely depends on tourism. It employs hundreds of people. Spiti will be losing on the tourism revenue if they decide to close the borders.

According to the local officials, the winter season will increase the possibilities of infection even more and the valley cannot afford to get infected by COVID-19.

In other areas of Himachal, tourism activities have begun and hotels have started their booking for the tourists. The government also allowed all the bars and restaurants to resume their operations.
