Two Covid testing labs accused of doing fake tests during ‘Kumbh Mela’

700 people got testing with one single Antigen test kit.

During the Hindu festival ‘Kumbh Mela’ in April this year, two laboratories are being prosecuted for conducting 100,000 fake antigen tests. These two laboratories are accused of continuously uploading fake Covid data onto the official database.

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has a portal where the Covid tests were constantly uploaded even after the festival of ‘Kumbh Mela’ was concluded. As per the investigation, the 2 private laboratories Dr. Lalchandani Labs and Nalwa Laboratories were only given a contract for 1 month.

But, both these laboratories kept on uploading fake Covid data onto the ICMR portal after their one-month contract. According to the reports, these two labs kept uploading the fake Covid data until May 16th.

The case of criminal conspiracy and cheating has been filed against these two labs under the Disaster Manager Act and Epidemic Diseases Act. Both these labs have refuted the accusations filed against them.

According to the reports, a single antigen test cost around 200 rupees per person, and the total invoice that was raised for the tests done for all the Hindu pilgrims in Kumbh Mela was around 2.4 million rupees. It is also reported that there were crores of rupees that were these two laboratories earned through their fake testing.

During the ‘Kumbh Mela’ in Haridwar, the daily quota of 50,000 tests needed to be met to allow people to conduct their ritual bath in the River Ganges. These Hindu pilgrims insisted to be allowed to celebrate the annual Hindu festival despite the Covid restrictions. It seems that the fake testing was an easier way to give the authorization to allow pilgrims to bathe in the River Ganges.

Currently, these two laboratories and their officials are fighting a court battle over the cases that are filed against them. The following report from ‘Times Now‘ details the investigation that is ongoing with the two laboratories that conducted the fake Covid tests.
